  About the Artist

I have been trained, not in art nor photography, but in chemical engineering, and I have been practicing that art for 50 years. And I have been photographing open-wheel racing for over 20 years, visiting more than a dozen venues in the US over that span. That does not include the Watkins Glen Grand Prix in 1958! So why am I here?

Part of my chemical business involves composites, an engineering system calling for the bonding of fiberglass and/or carbon fiber with polyester or epoxy resins. And of course, that is how the open-wheel race car is constructed, built very strong to protect the driver from 200 mph crashes. So it was only natural that I take my interest in race car engineering and race car photography, and blend these together to create race car art.

My interest in computer art was initiated with the Amiga computer way back in the middle ‘80s, while I was photographing race cars, primarily at the Long Beach Grand Prix and Ontario race way. I knew then that I wanted to digitally paint auto races but these skills had to wait many years to develop, as programs to allow me (and others) to express my artistic desires lagged behind my interest.

On the computer, I use Corel Painter exclusively, as I am able to paint my picture pixel by pixel. The computer is merely my easel: I choose my brush and spread my paint across the monitor one stroke at a time. And the best part of this method of painting is its tidiness, no dirty fingers and no messy clean-up!

I hope you find these pictures as exciting as I do when I paint them. They represent the color and the drama of open-wheel racing as I see the race, and I truly hope I have passed along to you my own enthusiasm. I can hear the roar of the engine: can you?
